Romance Pros – Dating Women Seeking: How Much is Too Much Girl Talk?

By Jeff Walters on April 15, 2010

Let’s face it; most girls really know how to talk. It’s in our genes and sometimes it drives our men crazy. There are varying figures out there, i.e., women speak 30,000 words in a day versus men speaking 15,000; and women speaking 20,000 versus men speaking 7,000. Regardless of which scenario is correct, the facts still stand that women speak more words in a day than men do. In my personal experience, I know this is true, especially when my husband comes home from work and all I do is go on and on about my day, when he just wants to turn on the TV and tune me out. He’s already used up his word bank at work!

That leads me to the next point, which is that girls love to chat with their lady friends about life and everything that is going on in their various relationships. We do like to live vicariously through each other’s lives. The chatter is great, particularly when it comes to our respective love lives. However, we need to dissect this subject and ascertain when it all becomes too much information to share.

Could that be possible, you say? Actually, it can. It is helpful to share details of your dates and budding romances with your girlfriends and ask for advice etc. Nonetheless, there is a point when this divulging of intimate information crosses the line and can create conflict in your relationship with your beau. Friendships are wonderful and should never be taken for granted, but you need to decide when your budding relationship begins to take priority number one in your life. When that happens, you know for certain that it is time to start changing the topic of conversations with your girls.

When you are in a serious relationship with your partner, you begin to share very intimate moments, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Those special times are between you and your partner. Now it may have been helpful to dissect your initial dates with this man with your girlfriends. But that time is past. If you value your relationship with this person, it shows that you respect him by keeping quiet about those details. Hopefully, he will not be sharing any information with his boys either and this is a topic of discussion that can move your relationship to the next level of commitment.

Of course, your girlfriends may not take too kindly to this vow of silence you’ve taken, but a true friend will understand and not get overly worked up about this news. This can also be a stepping point of greater emotional bonding between you and your girlfriends as well. If there are questions as to why you’ve decided not to spill the beans all the time, share the facts that you do not want to put a strain on your friendship with them nor with your beau. Explain that you are moving onto a new level with your man and you need to start keeping private things private.

If that is not enough, express your fears that you do not want to disrespect him and that talking about him behind his back, even if it’s not bad talk, is not good for your relationship. You can say that continuing in such a speech pattern, can lead to you eventually sharing your annoyances about your man with them and that can lead to no good. Discussing your mate in a bad way with others, can only keep your focus on his bad traits when you should be focusing on his good ones. Remember, your number one priority is now your man and you need to value him at all costs. It is very possible to balance your relationship with him as well as with your friends, just keep the discussion of relationship woes limited and if you have to say anything about your man, tell them how awesome he is!
