To really get to the key idea working of viral marketing, one must examine first what it involves. Viral marketing is the use of various social media to influence a buyer or reader’s decision. It is done by companies that pose as peers on the internet giving reviews or suggestions of certain products. This makes it extremely difficult for the actual shoppers and readers to decipher which reviews are placed intentionally by companies and which are legitimately reviews or suggestions.

These companies can also utilize social media like MySpace and Facebook to act as friends or users that suggest a certain site or products. Some of these companies can even hack into these networks and enter comments on users’ pages as friends that they recognize. The messages appear as if they are from one friend to another. While many internet users are wise to these viral marketing ploys, many are led to sites and products that otherwise would not have been mentioned.

They also hire companies that use “spam bots” to send a mass volume of e-mails about a product or offer to e-mail user accounts.

The various methods of the working of viral marketing can be both beneficial and detrimental to a company. One way that using spam bots can be beneficial is that it helps a company’s business to spread their brand’s popularity. This can increase sales and references that would not have existed previously. However, using spam bots to achieve this can turn customers away, as they will brand you as a “spammer”. This type of viral marketing can be positive or negative depending on the frequency and persistence of its use.

Using social media can also get your company kicked out of its social media circle. Overusing links in forums and blogs are a red flag to site owners that you are viral marketing on their site. Although this type of marketing can influence buyers and lead them to your site, this is generally not welcomed by blogs or forums, as they are intended for the common user to gain information. Too much of this activity can damage your reputation and decrease the spread of your product’s popularity.

While viral marketing is a popular way to influence buyers online, it does involve some risks. If you are ready to regulate and carefully use viral marketing to boost your company’s popularity, you may succeed in this type of marketing. However, if overused, this marketing tactic can certainly get your company “blacklisted”.
